Dear Reader:
Who would have thought that a simple school poster, could make a world of difference in the life of a sixteen year old.
I guess I'm going to have to start a the beginning to help you see where I'm coming from.
The year, 1989, and we were already two months into the new school year. I didn't tell anybody this... not my parents, not my friends, nobody... but this was going to be my last semester.
I don't know why, but for some reason I was getting sick and tired of school. After all it wasn't like I was actually learning anything new. I thought I had it all figured out.
What I didn't know was... by the end of our high school spirit week my entire outlook on life would be changed (Thanks to a simple school poster)
A School Poster Is Captivating
So now it's high school spirit week, I'd just left the cafeteria and I'm making my way to the gym to watch a basketball game between seniors and freshmen. Just one of the many school spirit ideas the staff came up with for our high school spirit week. As I passed the trophy case next to the auditorium something caught my eye. At first glance it looked like just another school poster, but it wasn't.
A School Poster Is Motivating
DON'T QUITWhen things go wrong, as they sometimes will, When the road you're trudging seems all up hill, When the funds are low, and the debts are high, And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit, Rest if you must, but don't you quit! Life is queer with its twists and turns, As everyone of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure has turned about, When they might have won had they stuck it out. Don't give up though the pace seems slow, You may succeed with another blow!
Often the goal is nearer than It seems to a faint and faltering one, Often the struggler has given up When they might have captured the victor's cup.
And they learned too late, when the night slipped down, How close they were to the golden crown. Success is failure turned inside out, The silver tint to the clouds of doubt.
And you never can tell how close you are, It may be near when it seems so far. So stick to the task when you're hardest hit, It's when things seem the worst, that you must not quit!

A School Poster Can Be Life-Changing
I must've read that school spirit poster three or four times that day, before reality set in. Something had to give... but there was no way I was going to quit. I can't explain why the words on that school spirit poster affected me the way they did. And I can't explain how a school spirit poem could turn a sixteen year old's life around. All I know is that it did, and that's all that matters.
